Modern muay thai punching techniques are influenced by Western boxing. Jabs, crosses, hooks, uppercuts and more unorthodox techniques such as back fists, are all part of the muay thai fighter’s arsenal. However, punches to the body are not as common as in Western boxing, as they can put the fighter susceptible to counter strikes from knees or elbows.
The punching arm should protect the jaw by the slight elevation of the shoulder. The hand not punching is kept close to the face to protect against counter attacks. The power of a punch is in the rapid, explosive execution, and weight shifting through correct leg, hip and shoulder movement. The first and second finger knuckles of the fist should be the ones making the main contact in a punch.
