Head Kick for Muay Thai/MMA
The muay thai -style head/high kick is arguably the king of all striking techniques. It has caused countless KOs in muay thai fights and then later also in MMA, as mixed martial arts fighters noticed its brutal power and started incorporating this kick in their repertoire. The mechanics of the kick were perfected by the Thais, and there are clear differences compared to many other striking arts originating from Asia, that make this kick so powerful. For instance, the muay thai fighter aims to “kick through” the obstacle and not stop motion at the moment of impact. Also, when the kick reaches its object, optimally it follows a horizontal or even a slightly descending path. This allows for maximum power and makes it more likely to pass over the opponent’s guard. To be able to do this with any real power, the hips must be turned with the kick, even when kicking high. Practise the correct mechanics in shadow boxing first, and once you start feeling confident, move onto practising with more power on the muay thai pads and the heavy bag.
