Fighters who have mastered their roundhouse kick can kick with the force equivalent to being hit by a baseball bat. The roundhouse kick can be targeted low, medium or high. Continuous leg kicks to the opponent’s thighs cause damage, slowing down the mobility of the opponent, sometimes even prematurely ending the fight. High kicks can result in knockouts, while repetitive mid-level kicks can take the breath and energy out of an opponent.
The power in the kick comes from the explosive rotation of the hips and foot. The kick side arm should swing down for additional power, but the shoulder should be kept elevated to protect against counter-attacks. When throwing a roundhouse kick, the fighter must imagine “kicking through” the opponent. This will give the kick additional power. Contact is made preferably with the shin bone.
