Shadow boxing offers the opportunity to identify bad habits in the fighter’s style. For example, monitoring the fighter’s shadow boxing might reveal that he drops the guard during fast combination strikes. This is then taken under specific surveillance to improve and refine technique. Shadow boxing is also a good way to warm up for, or cool down from training. Mirrors can be used as a tool to spot technical errors in the case of boxers training alone.
If the fighter is preparing for a future fight, shadow boxing is adjusted to conform to the style of the opponent. While shadow boxing, the fighter then imagines the specific style of the opponent and practices the techniques, counter-attacks and tactics that are likely to work against that opponent.
