Muay Thai/MMA Spinning Back Elbow: instructional
Learn the surprising, brutal spinning back elbow!
The spinning back elbow is a flashy, yet extremely dangerous technique that can catch the opponent off guard. In the correct execution of this technique, a sufficient step forward and across should be taken to close the distance. The clockwise turn (for orthodox stance fighters) from the waist and hips should be done quickly for power and to minimize the amount of time the fighter is unable to see the opponent. A common mistake is to take a step with the back foot. This elbow strike is most often performed using the rear elbow but can be accomplished using the lead elbow as well. The fighter should return quickly to normal fighting stance after the strike. If the spinning elbow misses its target, the most natural way to return to fighting stance is to continue through making a 360° turn.
